Rampage Victims Of Rock Rare

Sadly, both Rampage's 1981 debut LP 'Victims Of Rock' as well as their second an final LP 'Love Lights Up The Night' from 1983 were released on the small indie German label Hafenklang Records and therefore did not get wide distribution at the time of their releases. Likewise, this band has not yet been chosen by a label to have their catalog reissued. This is truly sad as both Rampage LPs are now exceedingly valuable, but more importantly, the music contained within is of such a high quality of vintage European traditional heavy metal that they deserve to be heard by a new generation.

Victims Of Rock

Rampage's 'Love Light's Up The Night' LP is seriously an almost flawless piece of melodic (almost to the point of pop-styled hard rock and AOR) traditional early 80's European metal. Much like the Netherland's Highway Chile and their amazing '83 LP 'Storybook Heroes', 'Love Lights Up The Night' is perfectly unspoiled by any need to try to fit in with the very early but quickly growing speed metal/thrash scene. This is early 80's traditional metal based soley on top-notch songwriting of the extremely catchy variety, excellent twin axe-work from guitar legend Roland Grapow and Karsten Heyer which relies on the classic styles of bands like Thin Lizzy, UFO, Scorpions, early Accept, etc., for influence. Another factor which made Rampage stand-out was the excellent vocals of Hans Barth.

Often-times German metal has been criticized for its heavily-accented vocalists. Fusionfall Download Full Version. Hans Barth however, has very little noticable accent and his vocals are very reminiscent of classic NWOBHM bands like Heavy Pettin', Stampede, and Jon Deverill-era Tygers Of Pan Tang. Yet, this is not to imply that Rampage tried to hide their Germanity. The mournful, at times neo-classical melodies found in so many of their tunes are extremely reminiscent of fellow late-70's and early-80's German rockers like Scorpions, Faithful Breath, Accept, in addition to the cold melodies of Swedish groups like Heavy Load, Glory Bells' Band, and Dutch legends Picture. The album starts with the supremely memorable title track 'Love Lights Up The Night' which features one of the raddest harmony choruses you'll ever hear. Some may be put off by the undeniably poppy 'Listen To My Heart Again', however for me it is just another example of how excellent Rampage were as songwriters and it is an example of a form or hard rock/metal hybrid which is very rare today.

Almost all the songs have an upbeat vibe to them, particularly 'Back Again' (which closes the album and features a killer back and forth guitar war between Grapow and Heyer), although tracks like 'Sarah' and 'Don't Waste Time' have a darker edge which it seems early 80's European metal bands had a knack for. In all, every tune on the album is superb. The production top-notch (this album sounds like it was recorded by the legendary Dieter Dierks of Scorpions, Accept, etc. Fame) despite being handled mostly by the band. This fact further illumunates the talent that the members of Rampage possessed.

Of Rampage's two lone albums I prefer 'Love Lights Up The Night' by just a hair over 'Victims Of Rock', although it's so close that I may as well say I love them equally. If you are a fan of late-70's and early-80's melodic metal with a hard rock edge and tons of melody then Rampage is an absolute must-hear band. Fans of Picture, Heavy Load, Highway Chile, Faithful Breath, early 80's Scorpions and early Accept will find Rampage extremely rewarding!

Until some awesome label reissues Rampage's two masterpieces however, you may have to do some searching to find them. You will be highly rewarded with what you find!
